FISSTA AGM 2001

CHAMPION OF WILD ATLANTIC SALMON ORRI VIGFUSSON ADDDRESSES AGM OF FISSTA 2001
A salmonid dream team of guest speakers enthralled delegates at the Annual General Meeting of FISSTA held in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel in Athlone last Saturday 24th November 2001.
Chairman of FISSTA Noel Carr announced that it was his pleasure to be able to present the champion of salmon and the champion of seatrout to a well attended meeting of delegates from all parts of Ireland.

Orri Vigfusson

Mr Vigfusson gave an excellent presentation on how much the future of our salmon depends on the Irish Government and he appealed to everyone throughout the land to use every bit of influence and pressure to get Minister Fahey to buy out the driftnets now, before it is too late. The full text of his speech which includes his 10 point plan will be available on this site soon.

Graham Shaw

The champion of the seatrout in Ireland and Chairman of Save Our Seatrout, Professor Graham Shaw also addressed the AGM and gave an update on the level of pressure Minister Fahey is resisting by refusing to order the relocation of finfish cages away from the estuaries so that sealice pollution is reduced.

The Norwegian Government has already done this in 38 fjiords and as over 75% of the fish farms in Irish bays are Nowegian owned Professor Shaw believed that this also should be a rule of production in Ireland. Instead, the unbridled production of finfish farms are being imposed on us and our pleas of caution are being ignored.
