12/11/2001 - FISSTA SLAMS THE EU DECISOIN TO GRANT THE FIRST EVER EUROPEAN PATENT FOR GENETICALLY MODIFIED FISH

FISSTA has learned today from a Press Release from enviromental group Greenpeace that the EU Patents Office in Munich has granted for the first time a patent for genetically modified fish.
A Canadian company called Seabright obtained patent EP 578 653 on Atlantic Salmon and all other fish species carrying an additional gene for faster growth.

Not alone are the EU prepared to preside over the decimation of the wild atlantic salmon by allowing mixed stock fisheries by driftnets, aquaculture practises that decimate the salmonid species, but now this permit that the EU Patent Office granted last July will no doubt have serious implications on our sport, tourism industry and environment.

FISSTA calls on the Government, and all Irish opposition political parties to denounce this crazy gambling experiment with our lives and species in the pursuit of greed.
